Hi, was replacing my rear cogs & noticed that in the centre especially they have cut into the splines slightly, creating notches. What problems will this cause & do I have to get a new freehub? I have been noticing a sort of clank-ping (hard to describe!) noise and feel something shift slightly when accelerating & climbing - is this due to the notching do you think? New chain, chainrings & cassette so prob is not with them?

Cheers!

Near the bottom there is a section on non-shimano hubs which has pic similar to your description, may help explain how it happened and you can apparently clean off the burrs and continue re-using.

It is common with aluminium freehub bodies.

  • i have had the same thing recently - my friendly local shop rebuilt my hub and reinstalled the sprockets forgetting to put the 1mm spacer in between the hub and the big sprocket.... a couple of commutes later i realised what the sound was, tried to nip up the locknut and bought a replacement spacer and fitted it when they wouldnt nip up tight.
