Hi Guys,

Have had my bike a while now, given the stock saddle enough mileage to understand my rear isn't overly keen on it.

Question is: Recommended saddle replacements, what are your favourites?

Ideally would like to keep the costs down, although if req. will consider up to the £100ish mark.

  • I've recently changed from a cheap stock San Marco saddle to the Fizik Antares (Ki'um rails version) and can't believe how much difference there is....

I wouldn't say it's massively more comfortable, but 50 miles into a ride i can still sit down and hardly feel anything. I can also feel my arse the day after now too.....Never thought a saddle so thin and light could be so good!

Can pick them up for £120 ish new, but if you look around, you might get a cheaper one. I got mine off here as someone couldn't get on with it. Pretty much brand new! :D
  • I've just got myself a Specialized Romin, and have to say it's a big improvement over the stock saddle that came with my Allez.

Charge spoon is probably a good place to start its quite well rated and only costs £20 - £25.
Saddles are a very personal thing though - what one likes won't suit another.

Just bought one of the 2010 models for myself. Not fitted it yet, but I believe it was Bikeradar's saddle of the year 2010, it gets universally excellent reviews and all for 40 quid!

I actually have a Charge Spoon on the mtb, for some reason I believed this was more suited to MTB and the Charge Knife more inclined for road?

I have been trying to get my hands on a Romin on Ebay for a while, but keep losing ou, so may have to stop being a tight wad and just buy one - I tried one previously and it was extremely good - miles better than the Bontrager plank I currently have. Be aware they coe in 3 width sizes 130mm, 143 and 155 from meory to fit different widths of rump (sit bones to be precise)

I only take saddle advice from people who have the same butt as me.
When testing a saddle it helps to know what makes a saddle comfortable or not.
    My take is:
Sufficient support for my sit bones.
Sufficient clearance to avoid squishing the bits inbetween
Padding that is thin enough and hard enough not to bounce up and cut off my blood supply.

My fav saddle is a beaten up old Specialized that came on a used bike.

Once you find a good saddle, never sell it and try and get a 2nd one.

Get yourself down to your local Fizik dealer and test all the saddles, they should have a test saddle for every variant. Go out and put some miles on one and they then should be able to point you in the right direction.

Arione for me got two now. Had a charge spoon on the commuter, but the arione just fits perfect, especially with padded shorts.... although today i did a turbo session is just normal shorts was a bit harsh for the first 5minutes then felt good.

The Spoon was really comfortable although after a while it became sore on longer rides.

Saddles are a VERY personal thing one mans comfort is another mans hell

When I bought my bike secondhand, it had a Toupe 143 on it. In the search for greater comfort I went on a quest to find the perfect saddle for me. I tried all of the three main Fizik saddles but couldn't get on with them (my LBS had a test scheme). The problem for me is I need a cut-out for my perenium. I then tried a Selle Italia, but this was problematic too. I popped my old Toupe back on, and it just didn't seem bad at all.
You just have to try these things out... forever reading reviews and looking on websites won't get you very far. People will say that saddle X is better than saddle Y, but it's far too personal to be objective.

After reading various comments and reviews etc, I've decided i'll first swap over my Charge Spoon from the mtb onto the boardman - see how I fair with that over 70+ miles

Depending on results, will endeavour to "test" out some of the recommendations noted!
Cheers for the advice guys.

Sensible decision ! I've the spoon on my winter bike - its good. Fizik Arione on my summer bikes - also good - but terribly pointy at the front. Digs into you when you stop at lights and put a foot down.
  • Would you cconsider selling your Boardnam Saddle? If so can I have first dibs on it?

I also have a spare fizik arione that I didn't get on with if you're interested

Love my stock Planet X saddle. Wasn't expecting much and thought an upgrade would be on the cards in search of the perfect road saddle, but it just fits.

But saddles can be very personal... there are some shops that allow you to try before you buy (hold a stock of demos I guess)
