My brother - who is a big lad, a bit overweight, and in his fifties - is looking to get a bike to ride around on and generally get a bit of exercise at the weekend.

Budget £350, absolutel max - he's looking at Ridgeback Rapide Spped. Can he do better?

Many thanks.

He might be better putting the £350 into a nice used bike than buying new at that pricepoint?

Local ads, classifieds etc may be the place to look!

What about this from the classified section on here?

At that price, I'd go for the cheapest Specialised Sirrus. Nice bike.

I'm also looking at that price range atm. I've been looking at the Carrera Gryphon (new 2011 model came out today)

Be interesting to see how these compare as they both get good reviews - I am not an expert but just offering an alternative.

Bonus for me is I can see the Gryphon and sit on it, test it etc - but most likely not the Specialised.

The 2011 model has discs as standard. (See link in my post above). For some reason Halfords don't have the Large version on their website.

Going to be a case of trying to view both, getting a feel for them!

Just found out a LBS sells the Sirrus online so most likely has them in store - so at least I can view them. Shame we HAVE to use Halfords for the C2W scheme as I'd much rather use them!

Halfords however are a really crap bike shop!

    I completely reccomend Scott hybrids.

I picked up a mint Scott Sportster P6 2010 that had done about 50 miles for £170 off Gumtree.
    The RRP was £349.99

That got nicked and then I scoured Ebay and got another mint Scott - a Scott Sub 30 2010 for £300 - RRP £549.99

I still have that and can't rate it highly enough for the price I paid.

At that price, I'd go for the cheapest Specialised Sirrus. Nice bike.

And I'd avoid them at all costs! - Get some idea about bikes and specs and then buy something 2nd hand for half the price of the new RRP

Sirruses? (is the plural 'Sirri' maybe?!)

Find my one fine (better than fine actually) but I guess different strokes for different folks, etc...
