Evening all,
I am looking to purchase my first proper road bike and have narrowed it down to three bikes,
The bike will be for commuting (20 miles per day) and weekend riding (100 miles+) as well as aiming to complete the LEJOG route sometime next year.
In summary....
The Cube attempt is very highly recommended but has an aluminium frame. Its wheels and tyres are highly recommended (Tires: Schwalbe Ultremo ZX Kevlar 23x622
Rims: Fulcrum Racing 7 Custom)
The Focus Cayo is carbon and has a Shimano 105 groupset (as per the Cube)
The Dolan is also carbon but has an SRAM Apex groupset.
All of this is above my knowledge levels so I would really appreciate some advice please.
With so many opinions out there and so much advice I have been left confused as to which would be the best bike for me....???
Thankyou in advance for your help
Nick

Don't get so hung up on specs. They're all much the same anyway.
The best bike will be the one that is most comfortable for you and so gets used. Can you not try them out?
I thought Wiggle did a 'try it out and return it if you don't like it' thing?Basso Astra

Thanks for the advice, my error was getting too caught up in the variety of components.
Yes I believe Wiggle let you try the bike for a week and return it if your not happy, I guess my only concern with this is that if you go into a shop they can fit it for you there and then and tailor it to your exact size whereas I believe Wiggle just send you the bike (correct me if I am wrong)
In truth, the Dolan is supplied in the North and I live on the South Coast so will find it difficult to try out. The Cube on the other hand is sold in several shops nearby so I can easily check this out.
Thanks again for your sound advice.
Much appreciated0 -
I cant comment on the other two models but I have had two varients of the cayo (expert in 2006 and cayo ultra 2011).
Both are excellent - while I agree that going to a LBS can pay dividends (a good one as not all of them are) dont be put off by wiggle being mail order. You can contact them with your sizing and they will do everything they can to get the right fit for you. With the price you pay / save you could probably get a bike fit that other shops would throw in for "free".
I am biased towards the cayo as I think they are excellent !!
If you have a quidco account log into wiggle via that as you will save even more £ - if not google quidco and sign up.
Whatever you decide to go for, enjoy it !0 -
Hi jig,
Thanks for the advice, cheers for the tip on quidco, I have just registered so will see what savnigs I can get.
Can I just ask is there any difference between a carbon and aluminium frame (on bikes such as the above)??
Thanks again0 -

Review (sort of) of the Cayo

Traditional thinking is that aluminium is stiff and harsh whereas carbon is more forgiving and comfortable, but that doesn't seem to bear out in the reviews.
I don't think you can say whether one frame is better than the other. Both seem to have very good frames and it is a matter of personal preference.Basso Astra
