hello people

i have £1000 to spend on a new road bike, it will be generally used for training, but some sportives.
i have been looking at the Boardman team 2011 for a while now (http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_10001_catalogId_10151_productId_789209_langId_-1_categoryId_165710) but does anyone else have any other recommendations?
advise would be much appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
Jamie :)

Are you constrained to halfords because of C2W stuff at all, or do you really like the boardman?

Every bike range has a very compelling product in the sub-£1k market. My shortlist was the Cannondale CAAD8 or Synapse, Cube Attempt, Boardman Team and a few others.

Ended up with the Synapse on the basis of test ride. I do like the Boardman, but I wouldn't buy a bike that I am simply not allowed to test-ride...

There's no bad choices at this level, I really believe that! Whatever you buy would, I hope, make you happy. The support of a good LBS needs to be factored into your considerations, too ;)

+1. 1000 quid will get you the best part of 2000 quids worth of used bike, often barely used at all. Just wait for the right bargain.

    +1 for that advice.

2nd hand can get you a bike at half it's RRP and basically like new.

I know - I have done that twice.

I would ask how many miles they have done, reasons for selling it and evidence of them purchasing it.

Unfortunately I know a guy who claims benefits and steals high end bikes.

I fckuin hate him. If I could get him locked up I wouldn't hesitate. It's proving though!!!

I looked on EBay when I was after my bike, but many made prices close to what I could buy them for new. Otherwise, many others were not well looked after, or were potentially stolen (owner couldn't answer questions, no original receipt, etc). The ones that did go for a sensible price weren't in great condition. I think the fact that the TDF is now on doesn't help either, suddenly everyone wants a bike!

For your budget of £1K there are loads of bikes that are excellent. Try a few out and see what you like, I bet if you try out 3 or 4 you'll buy one of them.
