Test rode a Merida 91 which LBS stock. Not tried any others but another not so local LBS suggests a Giant Defy, prob a 2, based on my budget of £750 (part of the C2W scheme),
Going to commute on it and do triathlons at some point so didnt want to go mad. Merida not hard core race bike and felt Ok to a me, complete new beginner on race bikes.
Like to support LBS as in same town as I work in so v handy but before taking the plunge be grateful for any other options which you feel would be better than a Merida.
Can't find any reviews on the Merida other than their homepage website so know their history but not alot else.
This is my first post on this forum so apologies if mis posted etc

Merida are a big Taiwanese factory, 2nd to Giant in volume production. The manufacture for other famous brands (eg Specialized and according to rumour, Boardman bikes). Their own-label bikes look fine to me and just as good , if not better than others at the same price. My LBS stock them I if I had one, I would be quite happy with the quality.
How it rides compared to other brands is a different matter and only you can tell if it feels right.0 -
thanks for the reassurance re quality0

A mate of mine bought a Meridia earlier in the year - nice looking bike - he puts in sub 25s in 10m TT and pulled me along at 20+ for 112miles on flatout the other week - nothing wrong with Meridia in my book - I'd buy one if I thought it would make me as strong as him0
