I have the chance to train with a really good personal trainer for four weeks, four sessions per week. Is it possible to get results from only four weeks intense training and decent diet? I'm quite a stocky guy but I've lost a stone since I started commuting around 3 months ago, diet is getting much better however I've not been to the gym in years. Occasionally do a circuits class but not frequently, I go running twice a week. Would love to get back into the gym and thought this might be a good way to do it and get professional guidance/advice and a decent program. Due to cost I won't be able to do this later in the year so the time is kind of now... advice appreciated!

    It's worth it if :

    1. The trainer gives you a programme tailored to you that ensures every session is worthwhile.

    2. It gets you into regular, productive execise.

    3. You continue beyond the 4 weeks and settle into good long term habits.

So, in short you'll probably achieve weight loss in 4 weeks with 16 sessions and diet control. In truth you'll only achieve the beginning of improved fitness but this will happen as you extend the good habits in the months beyond.

I got the help of a trainer when I started to get bored and really didn't knwo what i was doing. The half dozen sessions last year were best thing for fitness I ever did.

    Do it.

Err- what results are you looking for? If it's to get better at cycling - save your money and get out on your bike more.

If you want to build muscle and get worse at cycling, then absolutely you can get great results in 4 weeks.

By intense are you referring to the current trend for high intensity with minimum intervals? If so, I'd go and try a class first.
I ride a bike. Doesn't make me green or a tree hugger. I drive a car too.

Intensity in terms of the amount of sessions in such a small period of time however I imagine it would be quite intense!

Good points, I think I will be able to keep it up for a good period of time certainly up for challenge. Think I'll give it a blast, going to catch up with him later and have a chat.

Thanks all for advice, appreciated

Due to an oversaea posting I stopped cycling and started running 5-6 times a week. With crappy food and no beer I shed weight very quickly.

How much is the 4 weeks and do you think it's value? What are your aims?

You can get a lot of motivation by having a Personal Trainer rather than relying on your own will-power. However, make sure you cut down on booze as this will pay dividende. After 6 months with no alcohol and a lot of improvements in my fitness/weight, I'm now down to a couple of pints of beer or a couple of glasses of wine a week. While this may make me a bit boring, it's made me much more competitive.

Anyone who cares about toning upper body is not a real cyclist.

Be obsessive about making those legs work harder, bugger the 'guns'
