Missing Gear

I posted this a few weeks ago and have followed the advice given but have not been able to solve the problem.

I've a Gran Fondo with 105 groupset. When riding, the gearing will not go into top gear (large chanin ring, smallest cog). I can get it running smoothly on the workshop stand with no chattering at all but as soon as I start riding it wont go beyong 2nd top (2nd smallest cog).

I've followed a video on YouTube, I've lubed all the points on the rear derailleur and fiddled with everything except the stop screws.

Interestingly I discovered this evening that if I try to get into top gear and the gears are chattering (chain on 2nd top) all I need to do is drop onto the small chainring (running a compact) the chain will drop onto the smallest cog. Although cross chaining very briefly all I then do is change to the big chainring and I am in top gear.

OK it works but it's not right.

Any suggestions?

Just slacken the top gear limit screw a little. That should solve it.

He isn't. It just helps the gear to change if he does.

No , he's right. The number of times I've nearly caused the world to end by crossing the chain you wouldn't believe......

If John Ts suggestion doesn't work it maybe worth going through the instructions and resetting up the rear mech. I don't know about Shimano but Campag mechs come with instructions and they do seem to work fairly well!

He is right BUT what he failed to recognise is that I am cross chaining to solve thr problem of not getting into top gear.

There is no point in cross chaining as you can get the same ratio a different way.
