DISASTER STRIKES!

Been away sunning myself for a week, got home on Saturday, and decided to get up this morning to see how my fitness had dropped on the bike...

At the end of my 20 miler (luckily) the chain snapped, my own fault - dodgy gear change up hill! The bike is an 80's Raleigh Record sprint, im wondering if its possible to get a new chain to fit this? (its a 12 speed) or if its worthit financially to do so. To be frank i dislike the bike, its a little on the big side, its not in amazing shape, i ride with a permanent buckle (rear wheels are a pain in the arse, with the old frame size i cant get a wheel to fit, without force or cold setting) but its all i could afford at the time (last year).

My aim after the holiday was to knuckle down, quit smoking, get fit and ride the wiggle rut in september, and im worried now the bike is out of action im just going to abondon all of the above and become a fat depressed lazy slob all summer...

Is it worth getting it fixed? will it cost me? i would rather upgrade but my budget is and will be for the forseable future pretty much zilch! but i cant live without the bike and riding around on a rusty old pile, too big for me is starting to get on my tit's, but without the rusty pil and even more in the sh*t...

Suggestions?

    give up smoking.

the £30 a week you save will pay for a good bike in no time.

give up smoking and stop wasting your money on your drug addiction. the money you save on the fags will get you a lovely bike in now time

by the way, have you ever been riding while smoking a cig?

    Never rode and smoked!

Good suggestion to give up, but by the time the money has mounted enough to get something that will actually give me reliability, summer will be over :(

Its a start though, so ill get on it....

If you want to keep the old Raleigh going you can get chains, 6-8 speed to fit your bike, and new Shimano 6 speed freewheels from Evans for example and probably a few other places as well, for my old Record Ace these cost about 35 quid, and the Shimano freewheel is a lot lighter and shifts better than the old Suntour block that was previously fitted.

You're fooling nobody. :D You want a new bike, don't you? If you're an unfit smoker it'll be one of the best things you've ever done in your (potentially longer) life. 8)

    Is it that obvious

I would love a new bike but i don't think £150 is going to do it, so may aswell get a £7 chain and keep riding the piece of turd!

well if the bike is otherwise Ok aprt from the chain, it wont cost much to replace.
Its not worth buying an expensive one. Also the wheel can probably be quickly improved with a spoke key.

If you have a knowledgeable cycling friend willing to help you it can be done very cheaply, otherwise taking the bike to a shop could end up costing you more on a bike thats not worth it.

Im quite handy with a spoke key, but it had no effect, took it to the LBS and they spent a long time trying to true it, it was a little better, but he said some numpty had tried to rebuild the wheel in the past and it was just wrecked beyond proper repair.

Or order your sparkling new bike on 0% interest free credit, put the money you would have spent on fags in a tin, at the end of the month pay that into your bank to pay for the bike.. blooming easy one... you carry on smoking then you will have to find the money from elsewhere.. its kinda like fag patches with a consequence

As an ex-smoker... @£3 a packet the cost was OTT. I was shocked to see they are now £7 a packet. Same as it costs to repair your bike.
Give up and free yourself from that 'chain'. It's amazing (apart from feeling better).. how you come to realise how much of your life is planned around smoking. You can do total withdrawal (it takes only about 7 days, the first 3 being the worst) to kick.... or if you are not as brave, switch to the gum. It's easier to give up from the gum as you remove the 'withdrawal feeling; from lighting a fag....but you don't get the cost benefit from day 1.

Stop and you'll never look back.

Off the main topic of your thread but forget nicotiine gum. Best thing you can do is buy a book called The Easy Way to Stop Smoking, by Alan Carr (not the comedian!)

Really did make it easy for me after 15+ years of smoking. You smoke while you read, and just know you'll stop by the time you get to the end. It's only about £8 from any decent bookshop.

I'd tried everything before without any joy including gum and inhaler things etc.

You can get some good second hand bikes , hardly used on ebay for that money.
