i live in a shared house so no-one will give me contents insurance

who have you tried? sounds a bit odd, what happens if you get robbed or your house burns down (touch wood it wont happen!)
im no expert but its the house thats insured and everything in it regardless of whos living there? if there are locks on each bedroom then you just insure your room and keep the bike in there, or locked up if its anywhere else (in a hallway, shed, railing outside etc).
wheres that guy on here who works for aviva when you need him??Santa Cruz 5010C

iver got mine listed under my contents as a seperate item only covers up to £500 for a single item though so if you have got a £1000+ bike its worth looking at specialist bike insurance although i cant remember if i put the single limit on or whether thats the maximum they offer.0

We just redid our house insurance with M&S following advice from the MBR forum.
On their premium contents policy bikes up to £4k are covered in and out of the house, as are any other 'personal' valuables with a very sensible explanation that personal means something you'd carry with you for your own use, i.e. phone, watch or mp3 player etc. Includes accidental damage cover, though I'm not sure how that would work with an MTB.
Cost? With a £100 excess and covering all six bikes (and the rest of the house / phones / laptops etc.)? £103.
Absolute bargain, I'm chuffed to bits with that. And no, I have no connection with the company at all.1994 Clark Kent F12; 2004 Mount Vision; 2011 Canyon AM 7, 2012 Canyon Torque FRX 6, a unicycle and a Brompton.0 -
Yeah, I had my two insured for 2.5 k total with evans and was paying 15 notes a month. Now they are in my buildings and contents, insured for use away from the house fir 3k total. I never had problems with evans but never had to claim.0

I use E&L insurance. It's not too expensive and is good for now. The policy is fine. Although when the house insurance comes up for renewal I will look at M&S.Many happy trails!0

Got my insurance through ETA. Cost around £80 a year for a £1200 bike kept in my shed.
Also includes accidental damage, so if you crash while your out on a ride they will replace broken parts and if you have a breakdown they will send a van to pick you up and take you home or back to your car, or pay for the transport if there isn't a van in the local area.
Pretty good for piece of mind. All depends where you are keeping it. Most insurers want £150 locks and anchors if your bike is kept oustide of your house. ETA just wanted a lock on the door of the shed. At the end of the day if someone really wants to nick your bike there is not much going to stop them so I would rather spend the money on insurance rather than locks. (Not saying it hasnt got a massive lock and chain on it!)0 -
Just thought I would add it was more expensive to add it to my contents insurance, which only covers for theft .0

Marks and Spencers all the way, i was sceptical about signing up online so i phoned gave my Quote number and asked specifically if i needed to list any of my 3 bikes individually (1000, 1200 and 3500) but i was told no they were all under the 4k limit and that there was no need. I was then told they would honour the 10% online discount for my quotation over the phone. Documents arrived next day. Havent had to claim thanjfully yet, but i have heard of a couple of others who did and no issues that they could report. So if you can go for M&S premium, as others have said covers you away from the house as well.0

Yeah I couldn't see anything on there either. Odd that it would ask if it's a folding bike, but not ask anything else about the bike.
