foot pain that causes me to stop

Wondered if anyone has any advice. After 50+ miles I begin to get pain in the ball/front of my left foot. It gets to the point where I can't man up enough and have to get off to give it 5 mins and a massage. After this I seem to be ok for another 5-10 miles before it returns.

I've tried altering cleat position, tried loosening off my shoes, tried wiggling toes every so often, and have now bought some gel innersoles I saw someone mention on here. Still happening though.

Anyone any ideas???

Which shoes and pedals are you using? I used to get quite bad foot pain when I was using SPDs and recessed cleat mtb style shoes. Since switching to stiff soled road shoes and SPD-SLs the pain has almost gone. I have very flat feet which is the root of the problem for me.

I have some shimano pedals and road shoes. I also have flat feet, but not sure if that's the problem as pain is at the front nd not the arch??

my foot pain problems disappeared when I started to spin more.

above 70 rpm, or slow light pedalling, no problems all day.

Under 60 rpm and grinding, putting a lot of pressure through the pedals, pain starts in minutes, if not seconds.

Stiff shoes and good insoles help, but the main thing that eased my problem was increasing cadence and reducing pressure. To that end I changed cassettes and inner ring so I could spin up climbs easier.

Riding all day for several days on my fully loaded tourer with mtb cassette and mtb triple and not one incidence of the foot pain.

if your feet are flat, your ball/big toe maybe raising up in the shoe because of you flat foot. try some arch support insoles (speciallized do them, make sure you get the right one for your feet, there is a heat board you stand on in the shop).if you have broad feet your shoes may be too narrow which could cause pain also.

Thanks all for the advice and suggestions. Will give the arch supports a try i think. Dwefinately comes on quicker when I'm putting more effort in, but would be fantastic not to have to worry about it, especially when holding other people up!

When I had this problem it was all down to the shoes being too tight and caused a ganglion in the foot. Loosen your shoes off to see if it helps but you have to give the ganglion a chance to go first.
