Crack In Frame - Terminal?

I have a Cannondale Six13 with what I think looks like a terminal crack in the frame.

It's an 05 Saeco team replica. I bought the bike 2nd hand a couple of years ago and I haven't had any crashes or anything like that. The crack just appeared the other day, though there has been some creaking noise for a few weeks.

I mentioned this on the cheap Chinese carbon frames thread and a poster suggested I upload some pictures to get some opinions on whether the crack is indeed terminal.

Sorry the pictures aren’t great, but just to be clear this isn’t just a superficial mark. If I run my fingernail over it, I feel a distinct crack. The crack goes around about 3/4 of the seat post.

Any advice would be appreciated.

This is just a filler crack Nothing to worry about it is just where the 2 tubes meet and a little bit of plastic is added to smooth off the join.

    Will go forever

Thanks very much for this. That's really good to hear.

Nope, I'm afraid, if the frame is a Saeco replica then its likely to be a CAAD5 made from aluminium alloy and therfore if it is cracked, then its terminal. I think the previous poster is confused by the fact you've called it a Six13 which wasn't produced at that time.
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..

To be fair I think it's you who is confused, They did make a 05 Six13 Saeco team replica:

And here's a picture of my bike from when I bought it.

Creaking and crack in paint = movement which probably will be terminal at some point in the future

Hard to tell from those pics. Safest thing is to have a bike shop check it, sudden frame failure can be very painful.

+1 with unixnerd, its you after all who will suffer the consequences.

If ok then fine may cost a few quid or nought depending on your lbs, but if it is something and you do have a failure at 40 going down hill what's going to save you?

I know am looking at black side there but.............

( Peace of mind rather than piece of mind.)

Thanks to all for the advice.

Following the initial reassuring advice I took the bike out for a hilly 40 mile ride today and it seemed fine. I had tightened up all bolts that might cause creaks or knocks and this certainly helped a lot in terms of the creaking noises.

However I take on board the advice to get it checked out properly.

If I can, I'll upload some better quality pictures.

  • I had tiny cracks in the old TT frame around the top of the seatpost - enough for focus to replace it with a brand new one. They looked a lot smaller than your crack (sorry!) personally having seen what happens to someone's face after a collapsed front fork I wouldn't ride it.
