I need a new crankset and was going to get the SLX double. I can't decide if I want single or double so was wondering if I could run a chain device using the outer ring and ditching the granny on the SLX

Sorry, I meant the middle, forgot there was the bashgard

Thanks for the quick reply, I'll start with a double

I've recently fitted the SLX double & bash set-up with a Blackspire Stinger to my Trance X4 and it's superb!!

I've not dropped a chain since and as I do very little riding on the road I don't miss the big ring.

I also fitted the double-specific SLX front mech and I think the combo of that, running about 1mm above the bash guard, and the Blackspire is a perfect trail solution.

Stinger's are pretty cheap as well (CRC about £22 IIRC) + there's a load of different colours available to add a bit of bling too :D
