Cycling home yesterday I noticed a knocking noise coming from my rear wheel when free wheeling. On closer insepection at home it appears to be coming from the cassette (1 knock every revolution). I'm thinking about buying one of those chain whip things to remove the cassette and try and see what the problem is. My bike maintenance knowledge is limited although I would like to learn more and I would appreciate some advise on 1. whether anyone knows what may be the cause of the knocking and 2. If I do start dismantling my bike I end up with a load of cogs scattered on the floor and have made things worse, how difficult is this to do. or should I just get my LBS to do it. Maybe this should be one for the maintenance forum but you seem to get more response here.

as the cassette does not move it is more likely to be the freebody.

have a read of Parktools and Sheldons pages.

Do you get any associated lack of drive?

I had a 1982 Vauxhall Chevette where the cassette rarely moved, and when it did it made an awful sound. In addition the speaker was "loose mounted" in the open glove tray and occasionally used to get sweet wrappers caught in it which made the sound quality even worse.

    No, just a knocking noise.

If the cassette wobbles slightly, the lockring might need tightening up?

have look through this first, there are plenty more on Youtube.

I did this for the first time on Monday night and thought it was pretty straight forward.
Sheldon Brown is also worth a look.
    Good luck.
