What would you do if you were in this situation?

Not posted on here in a while, but something happened to me and a friend today that I thought would be worthy of a mention on here.

Me and a friend were cycling home from rugby training (training for a tour to Canada in a few weeks, hence training in the summer) and our playing fields are located in the middle of a quite nice housing area with links to a council estate, with the odd "birko" as we call them round here passing through.

To get back to our houses we have to cycle up a moderately steep hill that is quite long. There happens to be an alleyway a close from the top. As were cycling up this hill, my friend's chain came off so he stopped to put it back on about half way up the hill. Meanwhile 3 "birkos" walk past him and ask if he needs help. I am at the top of the hill at this point not knowing his chain has come off. So i start to come back down to see what has happened. As I come down I see him get back on his bike only for him to be attacked by the 3 "birkos" as he passes the alleyway.

He manages to ride the first blow (a punch to the face) and turn around and try to get away down the hill only for one of the lads to grab him by the backpack and pull him off his bike and try to steal his bike.

At this point I had no idea what to do, so I'm wondering what you would do in this situation: Jump off your bike and try to help your friend leaving your bike unattended for one of the other 2 lads to rob aswell as your friend's bike? I literally had no idea.

Luckily one of the parents picking up another guy from training saw it happen and stopped his car in the middle of the road and jumped out to chase the lads off.

Sorry for the long post had try and give you the whole situation, so that i could get your opinions on what you would do etc.

Thanks, Harry

me personally, i think it would have been a reaction without thinking about anything else...i'd be straight down there off the bike windmilling kicks and punches to whoever came near me....

I would have been straight in to back up my friend, having said that I used to/still occasionaly work security and always wear a full face lid and DH gloves when riding (I tend to dick about and crash too much), so compared to what I've had to deal with, this isn;t much.
But if I didn't do this sort of thing for a living it would probably be a different story.

Why are MTB economics; spend twice as much as you intended, but only half as much as you wish you could afford?

Red mist would have kicked in and I would have been back to my mate in a flash with the intent of dealing out some punishment
Even if we came of second best, the @sshles would think twice before taking on someone again.

Pedal like a lunatic and ram straight into the first thug - metal bike = harder than flesh. Then shit myself. Then regroup and try to talk our way out of it. If you get into a fight and take some beats, you walk away with a damn good story to retell in the pub. If you don't intervene, you look like a royal dick in the pub. If you are the hero and save the day, you get free pints in the pub.

If you get knifed however, you're probably too dead to appreciate a celebratory pint.

Administer the smack, get some ID off one (wallet or something), gone and burned their house down, maybe kneecap and elbow all of them as well. 3 on one is bullsh*t and the only way f***ers like that learn is through receiving an epic reprisal so the next time they think about it they wince from what the last attempt cost them.

As I said before, straight in, but you are both rugby players so I would have though when it comes to a bit of thumping you'd be right at home AND have a whole rugby team or even more teams to give so retribution if necessary, I generally don't advocate large gangs of burly men going around beating the sh!t of people, but bike thieves are one of the exceptions

Unleash the beast. The beast that is hungry for violence and blood. the beast that yearns for carnage. The beast that wants nothing more than to smash and destroy.

Rugby. Team sport is it not for hard men. I would have rode my bike into them whilst un shipping my pump and given them the kicking of their lives.

I hate bike thieves. 2 Rugby playes versus 3 chavs. Dont know about your Rugby club mate but if we are wronged One in All in he's a mate for christ sake.

I know your average street rat can be tooled up now days but your on a bike at a top of a hill you could have hit at least one of them at 40 mile an hour. and if a team mates Dad can get rid of three of them they dont sound up to much.

Anger does kick in, but if the other 2 lads are not actually attacking your friend anymore, you might just be giving them your bike and possibly getting hurt. The only sensible reason to wail in is if they were still hurting your friend.

I think I would have to weigh up the chance of getting "a win" out of it and also the chance of one of them having a screwdriver or knife - remember these are usually skinny lads who dont eat properly so they are not actually that tough without the element of suprise so they often carry weapons. It is the sort of thing you do read about when someone is badly injured. Worth the risk?

Of course if the question is what would you like to do? The answer is give them a permanent limp.

Oh and nothing wrong with popping back down there next week with a couple more mates in case they are local and turn up again.
  • I don't know what I would have done.

Gotta love the internet tough guys!
you could have hit at least one of them at 40 mile an hour.

    a) how do you know?
    b) do you honestly think you'll just get up and dust yourself off after that and start throwing punches

Whilst bike as weapon sounds like the most sensible approach in the first instance I suspect I'd have watched in stunned silence, then by the team I realised what was hapenning they'd have gone - not sure what I'd have done then. If one has a bike and the other 2 don't then they're not gonna move that fast, riding into one seems quite sensible, just not at 40mph.

So in answer to the question, I don't know!

You go to your mates help even if its just ride up screaming at the top of your voice "the police are on there way".

I would have gone straight for kicking the feckers as hard as i can in knackers and us cyclists can kick, one of those feckers would be never having any more kids :P
