Which bike is the better they seem to be similar in spec but I am not sure what the difference is between the components

I will be using it to go to work on the canal about 8.5 miles and a bit of off road fun at weekends.

The Rockhopper has the better spec, but it does cost 200 quid more.0

There's much better bikes for that money out there. The Specialized has a better fork though.
For that sort of money I'd consider the Carrera Fury from Halfords which you should be a ble to get at a good price at the moment.
Also look at the Boardman hardtails in Halfords as these look really sweet. Better specced than either of the 2 you listed.
Boardman: http://www.boardmanbikes.com/mtb/ht_team.html
Fury: http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stor ... yId_165499
Or consider Merlin bikes:

And if you don't mind buying over t'internet:

A great spec as well
Also check Pauls cycles for deals on older (and often better specced) bikes from 2009 or 2010

Cheers guys more stupid questions which is better The boardman pro or the carerra fury? Sorry to be a pain. If it helps I am not exactly evil knieval on a mountain bike just a novice who is starting out hoping to develop it into another activity as well as kayaking and running. This will be paid for by the cycle to work scheme.Missing a Boardman cx team

The Boardman is better for most than the Fury, but the Fury is a slightly different bike to ride, try them and decide!
