I want to remove my drops on my SS and put on some 'cruiser' style bars but after removing the bar tape and folding back the hoods I cant figure out how to actually take the brakes off the bars - or how to get the cables out of the brakes!

Anyone with (hopefully) some inspiration. Thanks in advance.

download the manual for the levers you have.

but generally there is an allen bolt that you access fron the front of the lever assy and undo that, that releases the presure on the clamp and you can side off or remove the assy. the cables outer pull out. the the inners generally need pushing in. some require and additional cover to be removed. Again all covered in the relevant manual.

PS it would help if you mentioned the make/model/year

Hi there - thanks for this. They are really basic Tektro ones from 2009 so I'll have a dig around on the web for the manual. Thanks again.

Release the cables from the calliper and the inner will pull all tghe way through the levers are clamped on via an allen key which is behind the lever. Pull the lever to the bars and have a look.
I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.

    Hi,
If you have a modern stem, where you can remove the bar-clamp completely, you may not need to take the levers off. If it's a traditional quill stem (and you're planning on re-using it- if so watch the diameter of the bars!) then yes, take the cable out (lots of slack, poke the nipple in and wiggle it clear of the retaining socket) & undo the screw/bolt behind it.
If the new bars don't match the stem, then you can take the whole lot off together and start afresh!!

    Cheers,
    W.
