How to remove the indicator bit from my XT shifters?

I am having a bit of a bike-improvement evening....

Ok, I realise this is very simple but I am pretty thick when it comes to stuff like this - so can someone please explain how I remove the gear indicators from my XT shifters?

I can see two little screws which I *think* hold the indicator part in place. Do I just undo these? And am I right in thinking that the blanking plate is under the indicator unit or something? Does that just screw back in?

I am a woman with a glass of wine poised ready with my screwdriver and multitool...

If anyone knows I would be grateful - please explain it like you would to your Gran, and you're probably on my technical level

Cheers!

Undo the two little screws underneath, a wiggle of the indicator and it will come off. Inside the indicator is a blanking cap to refit using the two screws you removed.

    go for it.

but check that you do have the cover first.

Undo the two screws, pull the indicator off, take the cover from underneath of the indicator you have just removed and use one of the screws you undid to fix it to the shifter. Simples

Hmm, ok, will give it a go :D

Not sure I have the bit shown in the pic above, but to be fair i'm sat at the computer and not at my bike so I could be wrong!

    Fingers crossed chaps...!

If the blanking plate isnt there its easy to make a blank out of a sheet of plastic. Not all the XT have the blank a lot of the OE stuff doesnt have it.

depends on the model (year) but both have 2 littlle screws. put shifter into highest gear i.e. smalles cog then undo the 2 screws. Twist the indicator unit as there is a little tab on the later ones that locks it in place. The later ones have the cover as in NL photo; earlier ones do not - use insulation tape to cover the mechanism.

    Success :D

Have removed the indicator part (I had the blanking plates in the end!) and moved the shifters on my bars - very pleased with the result!

Thanks for all of your help 8)
