X0 Rear Mech Failure

Out riding with my mate yesterday morning when his rear mech failed. Not sure what he was doing shifting wise, but we were just starting a climb so he was probably putting a bit of stress through it.
Anyway, it seems like the tension spring that sits inside a barrel, level with the top jockey wheel has bent slightly and slipped out of its fixing point. We tried to fix it, but in the end gave up and converted the bike to a single speed to get home.
Has anybod seen this happen before? Is it fixable? The Mech is a few years old (not sure exactly how old as he recently bought the bike second hand).
Cheers, Paul.

not seen it before but it is a service part and there are multiple fixing holes (2) that it can locate in. Download the service info from Srams webby."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."
