Hi all just want to know if something on my bike is normal. I have just aquired a Trek Top Fuel 8 with a Fox RP2 rear shock. All the pressures and sag have been set up, and for the last 5 days i have been riding it on roads. The shock was fine and was quiet as a mouse. Today I have taken it off road and the shock has started to make a whoshing sound when I go over a medium to large bumps. The shock is still plush and i was just wondering if this was normal before I take it back to the dealer. I know my Reba forks make the same noise so am I being a plonker!

This is fairly normal. It's kind of subjective, depending on the volume of the whoosh of course!

    + some other bikes.
  • There is no creaking or squealing noises just the controlled whoshing sound.

I have never had a noise from an RP2 or any Fox forks and I give them a good beating. I would be concerned.

Do you run any damping on your bike?

TFC, it sounds like it's your rebound circuit. Try changing the settings and see if the noises change.

My fox on the rear of my wolf ridge and my brother in laws wolf ridge both do i.

I find its induced by water and more vertical terrain.
  • Hi, will change the rebound settings and take it out in the morning. Thanks for the advice
  • Had a fiddle with the rebound on the shock still has the sound, but is more like a shhhhh noise now. Think I will take it back to the dealer as it is only a week old and as it has only started in the last day? Pressures are fine and it still works though, but for how long?

If it is not losing pressure, and is holding and functioning fine, it seems normal to me. Some shocks make a whoosh noise on the downstroke as the air gets compressed.

    This. It's normal.
  • Hi fella and gals. Thanks for that. I have taken to the dealer anyway and they are going to speak to Mojo I think who they send all their shocks to for servicing. Just wanted to be sure as this is my first time owning a full suspension.

As above, it's just the rebound damping, you're hearing oil wooshing between chambers.

Then you've either turned off all damping, or it's not working, I'd be concerned.

I had this on my last bike but very loud. Its something to do with air getting in the oil iirc. Its nothing a good service wont sort out, but other than getting noisier it shouldnt cause any major issues
  • just picked the bike up. They put a new shock in and sorted it out nicely. There is a very very quiet shhh noise now which they say is normal.
