SRAM cassette removal

I have recently been trying to give my road bike a bit of TLC - bascally stripping it down for a clean and lube. No problems with most of it, I have collected the various 'specialist' tools over the years. However, when I came to remove the cassette (SRAM 9-speed) I found that, although the tool seems to fit perfectly, it was stripping the plastic teeth on the lockring even though I was only applying minimal force to tun it. I held off from removing it in case I damaged it beyond repair. I just wondered if I was missing something here, the plastic does not seem strong enough to be used for loosening this component. Any advce gratefully received. :?

must be a close range cassette thing as the wide range (mtb) come with black steel lock rings. as does the 820!

Sorry, meant to post this in the Road section - just copied it across. Thanks for the replies so far. It is definitely plastic which does seem strange, I thought it may be some kind of protcective insert but apparently not??

if it really is plastic then get into destructive mode and buy a metal one.

Ok, had a bit of a d'oh moment this afternoon.
Decided I would treat my mountain bike to the the same TLC procedure and lo and behold it also has a SRAM 9-speed cassette with the same lock ring fitted. However, this time when I inserted the removal tool and turned it the lock ring came away quite easily. I realised at this point that it is not in fact plastic but a fairly soft metal. The noise that I thought was the plastic splines being chewed up was in fact just the gnurled faces of the lock ring and the cassette disengaging. Bottom line is that both my bikes now have gleaming cassettes and the job was in fact a piece of the proverbial.

As I said at the beginning - D'OH!!!
    Cheers
