avid elixir pistons back too far

Help! Just changed pads on my elixir r brake. Pushed the pistons back first, but now the new pads are nowhere near the rotors. What do I do? :? :?

    That's what I thought. I spent 10 minutes pulling the lever repeatedly, but they are barely touching. Oh well, more of the same!
