Hello,
I am looking for new tyres for my Kona Blast (think 2003/2004) and have settled for some Specialized The Captain Control Tyre and I have a few questions?
I will be riding mainly road (commuting) and then occasionally I will go along tow-paths, canals and possibly off-road.
Firstly, are the tyres any good? They seem to have positive reviews and sound good for the money. But are they suited for what I need?
Secondly, I have found them for a relatively good and decent price on http://www.tredz.co.uk/.Specialized-The ... _15745.htm Is there a big and noticeable difference between the 2.0 and 2.2?
Thank you in advance for your help!

I have one on my front tyre, came as stock.
Must say I hate it. Rounded shape gives grip in the middle of the tyre and not around the edges. And also does not shed mud at all, just collects it. It is an ok tyre in the dry though!0 -
great on the back, poor on the front.
id get maxxis aspens or crossmarks for what you want. Or a Aspen on the front and crossmark on the back. both Maxxpro compound. size is up to you but 2.1/2.2 would work.I like bikes and stuff0 -
I seriously have no idea what to look for when shopping for bike tyres. All I can do is research on each tyre on the internet and rely on people's opinions.

Any good? They all seem to have good reviews.0 -
For what you want, ie mainly road, with a little light off road, then you should try Halo Twin Rails.

Asking about tyres on here is a minefield...!
Everybody has different opinions on every tyre. Lots on here have raved about the Captain's for just your type of use. And a good few people swear by one up front with a fast trak on the back as the fastest XC tyres around.
Then again some hate them and many more hate the fast trak which some love on the back...
It really depends what you want to do. They are not great in wet mud and slippy conditions, but you sound like your use off road will be more likely in dry conditions, so that may not be cause for concern.
Tyres that are great in mud are not generally that good on road and really drag.
The Captains in my opinion are a good compromise but that means that people who want serious road tyres hate them as do those that want serious off-road tyres designed for muddy conditions. So you can see why they sometimes arent liked.
Alternatives would be some decent Schwalbe tyres for a very good price at the moment at On-One, the Maxxis Crossmarks or even Small Block 8s. Bear in mind that many of these that will be good all rounders will share the same problems with muddy or slippy conditions off-road.
It just isnt possible to get a tyre which is great on roads and in the worst off-road conditions.0
