When fitting a new chain out of the box do you remove the grease it came with, if so what is the best way of doing so?

mmm, a bit contentious this one. Sheldon says no. However, I have seen a few things printed by pro team techs that say they clean off the packing grease asap.

My own experience is that I have found shifting to be a bit snappier if I clean off the packing grease and then add my own lube (say, Finish line dry). I go for a can of simple Muc Off degreaser (because I got a free one from my LBS), then rinse in washing up liquid/water, followed by drying the chain in the airing cupboard and then relubing. I know, slightly OTT, but the chains do come up lovely!

if you want to do something just wipe the exterior down.

it is not packing grease but good grease and will be the best lubing it will ever have.

Do you chaps not find the original stuff a bit gloopy/sticky? As I posted, I know Sheldon says don't touch a new chain for a good few miles but I find the shifting much slicker if cleaned and relubed. Took me a while to even think that Sheldon might be wrong on this one

THe only thing I've found with the wax the chain originally comes with is that it picks up dirt quite easily. But I wouldn't bother cleaning it off until it actually needs to be cleaned.

    It's there for a reason.
