Handle bar width ?

I'm looking to fit a wider handle bar to my bike as the current one feels a little narrow.

My question, is to measure the width of my current handlebar that has a slight rise and is swept back slightly do I measure in a straight line from end to end, or around the actual contour shape of the bar, as I don't want to measure it wrong and end up buying the same width!

no real issues going way bigger it's good to try out a freaky wide bar and hacksaw it down until you are happy with it.
