Changing cassette?

I've never done this before so excuse my ignorance/plain stoopidity.

The bike current has 9 speed mirage, can I just do a straight swap for 10 speed Veloce?

The wheels are pretty basic Campag Ambrosio, sorry I don't know what hub they have, but they are between 5-10 years old.

    Short answer - No

If you have a 9 speed bike then you have 9 speed shifters and derailleurs. 10 speed uses different shifters, a narrower chain etc etc.

Get a 9 speed casette and you're all good - if you want to go to 10 speed, you'll need to change most of the drivetrain at the same time to remain compatible.

You'll need a new right hand shifter and a new chain to go to 10-speed (as well as the cassette).

A Campag 10 speed cassette is 0.6mm wider than a 9 speed. I'm not a Campag user but I'd guess that if there's a spacer of that thickness on with a 9 speed cassette you can do away with it.

No doubt someone will be along soon enough to correct me.

You don't say if you're putting the wheel onto another bike which is 10 speed or if you want to move to a 10 speed drive chain on your current bike but if it's the latter, like the other posters have said, the indexing is in the shifter so you will need a new shifter to get the correct cable pull for 10 speed.

New brifters aren't necessary - it seems that the 9-speed can be converted to 8,10, or 11-speed.

 That is quite cool. You'd never get that with Shimano. User-serviceable parts?! HA.

    Sorry my mistake.
My new winter hack has a mis-match of stuff which I want to change the whole lot to 10 speed Veloce. It will then be compatible with my main bike.

So I can remove the 9 speed and replace it with a 10 speed Veloce. (is there space!)

I wanted to check that, as I'll be checking the Veloce cranks, I already have, fit.
As the rest will be academic.

Chainset will be OK, as will the derailleur. It's just the chain and shifter AFAIK. I don't know about the freehub...
