Will cartridge BB fit instead of square taper axle

Hi, I have an old Raleigh Activator mountain bike with worn square taper bottom bracket axle. Does anyone know if it would be possible to replace with a modern cartridge axle.
The size of the axle is 68mm x 124.5mm type 3S.
I have had a look at cartridge axles and 122.5mm and 125mm are available for 68mm frame but need to know if the threads are still the same size and diameter. Thanks in advance for any replies.
