Problem with the front gears

Hi all,

Yesterday I picked up my first road bike, a Boardman Race http://www.boardmanbikes.com/road/road_race.html on the cycle 2 work scheme. Anyway riding it home, I was going up a hill and switched to the smaller set of gears (you'll have to forgive my lack of technical lingo! I'm a complete newcomer), and carried on cycling, the bike started making a funny sort of grating noise, then after about 100 yards made a clicking noise, and popped back to the larger set of gears. When I tried shifting back to the smaller set it just won't do it, the lever feels all floppy, and won't shift at all the other way, although I guess that is because I'm in the largest set??

I've rang Halfords and arranged for them to have a look at it on Friday, they said they think the gear cable will just need adjusting, but was just looking for a second opinion really. The whole purchase left me with the distinct impression they didn't have a clue what they were doing!!

  • Does sound like they haven't adjusted/tested the gears before you picked the bike up, which if this is true is disgraceful....they shouldn't be sending bikes out like that.

As you state that the level is "floppy" it may be that the cable has snapped/frayed somewhere, which again, shouldn't happen with a new bike.

Being a cheeky bugger, if i was you then i'd kick up a fuss and see if you get any free stuff!

The main reason I wouldn't by a Boardman bike is the fact that you buy them through Halfords or on the web, any problems and your dealing with numb nuts. The bikes are perfectly good if set-up properly to begin with and then are maintained properly. They also represent excellent value for money but only if they are working properly.

    Give them hell
