Does anyone bet on cycling? What happens if winner is DQ'd?

As the resident cycling expert (aka i ride my bike a few times a week) i was asked for my tips for the TdF, which was unsurprisingly Contador.

But that got me thinking - if Contador wins, presumably the bookies would pay out - but what then happens if he is stripped of the win shortly aftwards when the appeal is eventually heard? Do they somehow cancel the payout? Obviously couldnt happen with a shop where you collect winnings in person but is a different matter with an online site that has your bank and credit card details already.

I've never placed a bet before so dont really know how this works

Bookies have a point where they declare the winner in every sport.

For cycling it's normally the podium, so once Contador receives his trophy, they payout and then won't payout again if the result is changed anytime after.

To counter this, bookies are offering "except" Contador odds.

However, bookies pay out on the result on the day - so for the yellow jersey, that'd be on the podium in Paris, and for stage wins, as soon as the first official result list is published.

They'll always be very precise T&C's for bets placed online regarding the payout, as said they will give a definition of the time and result that they payout on. Just make sure you read them first before parting with your cash.

The odds on Contador are rubbish so it's hardly worth putting money on him. I've decided to spread a tenner on a few riders.

The dissenter is every human being at those moments of his life when he resigns
momentarily from the herd and thinks for himself.
