Event Horizon - Sci-Fi but gives a startle or two\

Paranormal Activity (the original) - Freaky and surreal

A Haunting in Connecticut - Based on a true story and quite entertaining

What are you looking for in a horror?

Saw movies are original, especially the first ones, and not just mindless slasher.

Alien vs Predator, though of course you have to have watched
Alien and the first two Predators, which are all good films in their own right.

John Carpenters the Thing - my personal favourite.

Alien Vs Predator was a terrible film. No tension at all. It was mildly entertaining in a "so crap it's funny" way.

think i'll get event horizon, and a haunting in connecticut.

watched the 2009, 2010 versions of paranormal activity 1/2, didn't really find them scary

  • Start with the classics and you'll see how bad some modern films are:

    The Exorcist
    Psycho
    Texas Chainsaw Massacre
    The Shining
Alien (the original, not the spin off sequels)
    The Omen

there's bags more like that. If you want something more recent The Orphanage is one of my favourite films of recent years as is Let The Right One in. For silly jumpy fun though Paranormal Activity does tick the right boxes but it's nothing specical. There's also a doco on iPlayer about horror if you fancy reading into it, I really liked it.

When I say "horrible" I don't mean its a bad film but one that will scary the crap out of you.
    It's a good film

The house of the devil - this film had me fooled as I thought it was a 1980's movie yet it was only made a few years ago. Decent film.

The Children - I thought it quiet scary for a British film. It starts off slowly and then...wont tell.

Drag me to hell - I like Sam Raimi films and this one was good.

Pirahna - the Kelly Brooks one, very much tongue in cheek film and I wish it was my tongue in her cheek

    Don't look now - It's a classic and still a bit scary.

seriously though The Decent and Strangers really freak me out!

Exorcism of Emily Rose, not pant wettingly terrifying but very creepy.

Dark Water - creepy (only seen the Japanese version not the hollywood one so can't comment on the remake).

Wild Wild West, scared the shoot out of me for simply how utterly terribad it was

Drag me to Hell was more of a comedy, it cracked me up, not scary at all..

I downloaded The Human Centipede an it wasn't visually socking due to the low budget
I've read the follow up is a shocker, but our Film Board have censored it heavily which is a little ironic seeing as Hostel 1 & 2 were quite OTT on the gory level
  • if you can find it the Incubus is good, but TBH i havent seen a horror yet that has me running and hiding behind the sofa, The Entity is another creepy one

Mind i have been known to go on Ghost hunts and stuff :D

+1, just jumpy, and comedic. The old bird sucking her chin was a high/lowlight for me!

Just read about Human Centipede, that sounds pretty wrong!

I quite liked Shutter Island for a more recent one myself. Not terrifying, but worth seeing.

+1 for the original Saw, great film, and the oldies; the Shining, Texas Chainsaw Massacre etc.

A couple of pints and a curry with a bit of decent conversation does me for entertainment.

Still if watching something like the human centipede floats your boat....

I liked Drag Me to Hell, but mostly for the reasons Njee describes. Insidious was similar but not as good, pretty creepy for the first hour, then batshoot crazy for the last hour.

I personally liked House of the Devil a lot recently, but it's quite Marmite.

Saw Julia's Eyes yesterday and it was OK. Same people who did The Orphanage, but not as good. Some of the POV camera tricks (it's about a woman going blind and being stalked) were very good though.

    Session 9

I always find it mess with my mind, i live in front of a disused hospital which doesnt help, i just like the psychological horros, no real gore but leads you're mind in to a dark dark place where you think you know whats going to happen!

Creepers Jeepers - builds the suspense nicely
The Descent - makes you jump a lot
Nigtmare in Elm Street - the original, Wes Cravens finest.
The Fog - the original, builds the suspense up with darkness, fog and murderous sailors.
    Alien and Aliens

    +1 The Thing

I'm sure to miss out a few, but here goes. (As a general rule, modern horrors are vastly superior outwith the US)

Eden Lake - lovely young couple get terrorised by yobs - more nuanced than first appears.

The Descent - sexy female cavers' expedition goes royally tits up - claustrophobic and bloody

Mum and Dad - Heathrow airport and some immigrants - a superior Bristish take on the oft coted 'torture porn' a la Hostel (terrible btw)

Dog Soldiers - same director as The Descent, but featuring blokes. less heart in mouth terrifying, but some good shocks and a strong line of action and humour.

28 Days Later - the best zombie movie out there, even if they are technically infected.

The Shining - A masterpiece of brooding madness, which suddenly explodes.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre - This doesn't feel at all like a film - it feels uncomfortably REAL.

Carrie - The first half works almost perfectly as a rags to riches tale, which makes the rest all the worse.

The Mist - (Stephen King adaptation) has perhaps the most downbeat and horrific ending out there

Martyrs (a French film) perhaps the most gruesome thing I've seen (well made as a film but way more repulsive than a certain centipede)

The Orphanage is very good for well made, well acted bloodless chills,

Saw (the first)a solid twist ridden shocker whose reputation is now marred

Wolf Creek (mentioned already, but really terrific).

Let The Right One In - possibly a vampire romance??? No, seriously, this is truly scary at times, a deeply personal take on the vampire myth.

And, a left of centre choice, but the most horrific film I saw has to be United 93. It doesn't seem voyeuristic, and even out of context it works as a terrifying portrayal of ordinary folks coping with their imminent deaths. That said, one feels so much better for having watched and, for me at least, the ending of optimistic. Amidst all the
horror and hatred, the actions of those damned people showed selfless human compassion.

+1 for the original Japanese versions of The Ring (1&2)

I also really liked the original of The Grudge (Ju-On) and another Japanese film called One Missed Call

Actually, the remakes of The Grudge & The Ring are pretty decent too.

I was going to say, the remake of the Ring was pretty damned good. I watched it when I was on the verge of having a whitie, and it was the most intense cinematic experience ever
The Japanese one is good too, but the remake certainly didn't "ruin" it, as some would make out.
