seems pretty tricky to track down! my home town has loads of cycle paths, and they've all recently been re-signposted and smartened up, but i cant find any maps of them anywhere...

also, i'm told of cycle paths between chingford and tottenham hale, alng the canals, but cant find details online anywhere.

is there a secret web site that has all this info??

    the TFL cycling website?
  • Have a look here maybe...

    http://www.everytrail.com/view_trip.php?trip_id=943460

instead of taking the "left hander" out through Tottenham/Wood Green, stick with the river and it takes you down to Tottenham Hale.
Mostly semi-industrial surroundings once you're actually on the Lea Navigation. For a longer ride, go out to Waltham Abbey where there's a network of waterways and canals that used to form part of the explosives works, or take the shorter route via Ponders End (Wharf Road).
Mostly good towpath surface so suitable for just about any bike.

Many county councils have cycle maps available online if you search there webby, ours have the commuter style maps FOC and cycle 'trail' maps for 50p.

Also you can check the sustrans webby for the national cycle routes.

Sometimes parts break. Sometimes you crash. Sometimes it’s your fault.

    :)

Now switched to public; TfL marshals are posted at all waypoints to penalise anyone not engaged in illicit activities...

    http://www.cyclestreets.net/

    Might be of some help.

Edit - damn. Secretdancer beat me to it.

Not yet national but also worth a look is the TransportDirect Cycle route planner
Nobody told me we had a communication problem
  • cyclestreets.net is pretty good but there's also http://www.opencyclemap.org/ (If you know of a route but it's not marked on there, you can add it yourself.)

Also TfL produce some free Local Cycling Guide maps. https://www.tfl.gov.uk/tfl/roadusers/cy ... quest.aspx

Maps 4, 5 and 8 are likely to be the most useful for your neck of the woods.

Try http://www.Openstreetmap.org - free mapping and has a cycle route layer that covers national and local routes

thanks all, some good pointers there.

Decided to try the canal route from Tottenham Hale up to Chingford on way home yesterday. It was ok, but not great signposting - had to just guess a few forks in the path, and it got me to Ikea Edmonton, from which i could re-join the roads back to Chingford. Didnt really give me any advantage over my usual road route (Blackhorse Lane, over NCirc, up past dog stadium) except a lot more peaceful with no cars, which was nice :)

  • What sign posting do you want on a tow path ? You can't suddenly decide to turn right. Well not until you get to Stonebridge Lock and have to cross over.

Bikeroutetoaster and click on the cycle option.
I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.

the maps from tfl as posted earlier are great. I reordered the full set a few weeks ago and the differences between the 2002 versions and the most recent are amazing. for a free map its well worth it
Veni Vidi cyclo I came I saw I cycled

  • If you have an android phone you can download the gvSIG mini maps aplication which has a cycle map tile option.

This gives you a pretty decent path/road overlay with contouring as well.
