Anyone know anything about the 1990's Raleigh Pursuit?

Hi all,

I'm in the wrong forum here really coz I'm into downhill or singletrack stuff normally, but I'm interested in getting a little bit of distance riding under my cap mainly for fitness purposes. I've been out of cycling for a good few years now and my physique shows it but I want to do something about it, and while I'm picking up my mountain biking again quite quickly, I reckon I'll get fitter faster with a bit of road cycling.

Thing is, I'm skint, so I really can't afford to go out and buy a new all singing and dancing road bike.

I was in my local supermarket this morning and was checking out the for sale boards and there's a local guy selling an old Raleigh Pursuit road bike. I just spoke to him on the phone and he said although it's pretty old now (1990s he thinks from memory) it's in excellent condition and shouldn't need any setting up at all.

I'm just wondering if anybody on here knows anything about these bikes and whether this is a viable option for £60? I'm 5'8" and generally wear 30" (leg) jeans so I'm not vertically blessed, and my main concern is that it has a 23" frame. That seems to me like it might be a little big for me. But please tell me if I'm wrong. The wheels are 27" and it is 10 speed apparently.

Am I completely barking up the wrong tree here or is it worth a look?

  • On the other hand, if anyone could recommend anything else that would be suitable for a beginner... Absolute tops I could get away with is £200.

It sounds too big to me - £200 will get you something resonable second hand
Carlsberg don't make cycle clothing, but if they did it would probably still not be as good as Assos
  • Thought as much. Thanks.

Keep looking though, I picked up a Raleigh Black Flys off eBay for £26 and its done me fine for work but could definitely take it further if I wanted. Bargains to be had.
