Finally getting round to upgrading my stock R500 wheels this week. I currently have an 11-25 cassette and am considering changing to an 11-28 to help with the hills a bit (i'm crap at the moment). My question is 2 fold really...and bear in mind that the bike and components have done just over 1000 miles

1) Is it worth / should I change the chain along with the new cassette?
2) Will a standard (out of the box) 10 speed chain fit without any problems?

    1) yes. I would if i was you, simply to prolong the life of your new set up and, to avoid any slip if your old chain is worn.

    2) yes. Depending on brand. KMC are the most versatile and easiest to fit. (You'll more than likely have to take a few links out of any chain though so a chain tool will be needed).

Id go for a KMC X10 SL, in gold if you're feeling flush!
  • I have the chain tool.....will a new chain come with spare pins or will i normally have to buy these separately?

Was looking at the KMC X10 chain in red....but i'm thinking this is unnecessary bling, and maybe go for the gold!

the red chains look cool in a showroom, but the paint only lasts a couple of hundred shifts, so i'd definately go for silver or gold.

KMC chains come with a quick link which is dead simple to connect once you've got the chain at the right length. KMC also guarantee their X series chains to last longer than other brands

oops, re-read your question - no, there's no spare pins with them. i dont know of any brand that offers them with the chain
  • you'd think that they would give you a few just to keep you going!

Ah well, might be a job for the LBS!

Every KMC chain I have had has come with a quick link - no pins needed.
