Can someone point me at a website that explains, or explain here, how hills are classified in events such as TdF or even local Sportives? Are there any standards? or is it, as I am coming to suspect (somewhat tongue in cheek :) ), made up as by the organisers as they go along?

Thanks, thats exactly what I was looking for, and the links there to the average TdF categorisations for 1999-2007

Just means everything I thought 'hard' is a mere pimple lol

  • I can't remember if it's MapMyRide or Endmondo that does it for me. When i upload a ride i have done and look at the elevation, it automatically tells me if i've riden any category hills!

I think that in the Tour of Britain they do more or less make up the King of the Mountain classification.

When they've held stages local to me there have been hills which were classed as the KotM climbs, while other very similar climbs were unclassified.
