    1st thing-

    Join a club.

Then do some group training rides/chain gangs with them.

Get used to riding in a bunch safely so you don't cause crashes resulting in people wrecking their career progression by having a broken back/collar bone.

Then speak with your club mates about racing...

    Don't, it's addictive.

Priority - join a friendly local club that has a racing section .
Do some research on the BC/tli web sites to search out some local races to attend (i.e not actually take part) to give you an idea what the buzz is all about. Get chatting to people for info.
BC if you are younger.... tli/lvrc (just google these abbreviations) for the vet side of life (me)... altho tli is age related in most races.
Some do say tli is easier... but last race on Tuesday had an average of 25mph on a rolling 2.7 mile circuit.... high fun it was as well .
BC usually costs more to enter and licence is dearer as well.

Race and you will never again feel the need to pootle about in life

Agree, join up a club as you'll never gain either the fitness nor the bike handling skills to be competent and safe in a fast bunch.
Put it another way, if you don't, you'll be a liability to yourself and others.
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..
