Hi everyone!

I have recently bought a Carrera TDF road bike from Halfords. I really like it but I would like to get spd mtb pedals for it rather than the strap cages it comes with.

I have been looking around and like the look of the Shimano M520 Clipless pedals and something like the Shimano FN21 SPD Shoes.

My question is can I fit any pedal onto the bike and can any shimano spd pedals go with any shimano spd shoes?

Thanks for all your help

Thanks again

You can fit any pedal and lots of us use SPD pedals.

The key is to buy the stiffest soled shoes you can afford, but this applies to any cleated shoe. Shimano's mtb race shoes are very good. I have a pair of M183 which have a carbon sole. They are as stiff as a kitchen table.

520s are good pedals and excellent value. If you can stretch to the 540s, you will get a lighter pedal with better bearings and a nicer 'click' in but the 520s will perform very well.

I lashed out and got XTRs. After a year they are like new and feel like they will continue to feel like this for many years to come.

At the moment, I can say the same for my 520s. For £20 inc cleats rather hard to beat. I don't think there is a practical need to go higher for road use at least. Bling is another matter........
