Tyre and inner tube puncture

I found a small nail going through the tyre and the inner tube. Can I get away with just changing the inner tube and leave the small hole in the tyre or should I change both?

    You just patch the tube, that's all.
    Now where's that "Get Out of Crash Free Card"

    I've had a large nail gor trough both and pacting the inner tube wwas fine.

    Remove the tyre to see what damage is done to the carcass; it is posisble over time the tear will worsen up to the point the inner tube escapes via the tear, at which point it inevitably burst with a VERY LOUD BANG.
