I currently have a multi tool but i find that its inpracticle to use, so i'd rather buy the things i needed indiviudally, but what tools do you think i'd need to take out on a ride with me, so i can try and get these as small as possible?

I don't take any tools other than 3 tyre levers, a ptach kit and two spare tubes?
I ride a bike. Doesn't make me green or a tree hugger. I drive a car too.

    I always take the following:

    Inner tube

    2 x tyre levers

    Lezyne alloy drive pump

    Crank Brothers multi tool

    Cable ties

Luckily I've never had to use any of it...

    similar to the last poster

Inner Tube (2 for long rides)
Park tools self adhesive patches (other brands are available) with a little bit of sand paper to rough up the inner tube should I need to repair on the road
Tyre Boot for ripped tyre (never had to use but takes up no space)
    Tyre levers
    Multi tool with chain splitter
    Cable ties
KMC Speed Links / Missing Links whatever they are called
    Lezyne Micro Floor Drive Pump

Sounds a lot but all fits in to my mini saddle bag with the pump attached to my bottle cages

    Tube
    2x tyre levers
Crank Bros multitool (same one as for MTB, so it's a bit bigger/more comprehensive than I'd probably choose otherwise)
    Park Tool glueless patches
    Topeak pocket rocket pump
    Tyre boot

That all goes in my jersey pockets. The Tyre boot and the patches I've never used but then they take up no space and weigh virtually nothing.

I usualy take out 2 tyre levers, 1 inner tube, a pump, and my phone. in 36 years of cycling I've only failed to get home under my own steam on 4 occasions 2 of those occasions could have been avoided by better maintanence and the other 2 no amount of tools would have gat me home. I must admit though that up to about 1980 I used either a saddle or bar bag with enough tools in them to keep a small bike shop going.

Mobile phone, money, number of local taxi firm.

I also carry a spare tube, 2 tyre levers, a mini pump and a multi tool, but would obviously only use these if I was desperate

Pretty much the same as others, but all you need is the essentials to get you home and nothing else, The two main things that will stop you getting home is tubes & chain, I hit a pothole a couple of weeks ago and blew both tubes, I was only carrying one tube so had to phone for a lift. So my kit is:

    In back of jersey
    2 X Tubes
    2 x Tyre Levers
    1 X Small pump

    In small sealable bag
    £20 note
    Mobile
    Spare chain link
    House Keys

    Thats all i need.

Depends on what you want to be able to fix if you have an issue; which also depends on how remote and/or far away from your you are going; and what other backup services are available (wife, taxi etc) :)

But I generally I want to be able to recover from punctures, a snapped chain and whatever a multitool can fix.

  • Just getting myself organised. I used to be a mountainbiker in the past and used to do midnight forways into the lakes i got quite adept at emergency packs.

Having just started out on the road bike i am not as clued up but i cannot forsee any situation i cant get out of with the following.

Topeak Alien RX multitool. - Includes all of the main allen keys and chain splitter, tyre lever etc
    Spare tube
    Park patches
    C02 canister x 1 (Poss 2) and head
    Mobile phone

Planning on putting these in a plastic bag and stuffing into spare bottle. Cant think of any situation out on the road which i cant get around by either a good walk or a bit of fettling. Last case scenario, call the wife to collect me.

Absolute bare essential I ride with: phone, debit card, £20 in my top.

Usual kit in a micro topeak wedge saddle bag thing: inner tube, tyre levers, chain tool, park multi allen key thing.

I've never snapped a chain yet, but I've been on a ride where a friend did: that was a damn quick learning experience, as I hadn't used the chain tool before :D . In the middle of the peaks (off road), having it was the difference between minor inconvenience and major headache!

Much the same as everyone else except, after a rear deurailler and spokes clash, I now carry a spare mech hanger.

Had I been carrying one on the day it would have saved me a 3 mile walk and my friends having to collect my car.

    Never happened since funnily enough.
