A guy at work bought a second hand bike yesterday. He said that it was on an estate and the group of guys who turned up left him feeling rather intimidated. He was concerned that the bike could be stolen but I think the intimidation factor led to him handing over the money (apparently the bike is too small for him!).

Anyway, he wants to check whether he has bought a bike that is actually stolen. Assuming there is a serial number on the frame, can he actually search himself, or is it something only the police can do?
