I've cleaned my chain with white spirit and I'm re-oiling it, should I use "wet" or "dry" lube or go for something different?

Well it kind of depends on whether you'll be riding your bike in wet or dry conditions, doesn't it? The manufacturers of bike lube TRY to make it easy for you.

on the days when 'wet' lube can be too wet, and 'dry' lube can be too dry - how about some 'slightly damp' lube......?

I use wet lube most of the time unless it's particularly dusty. Then again I do strip and re-oil my chain weekly (the bike is used to commute a 20m round trip to work daily) so dirt build-up on the chain is removed regularly.

As said it entirely depends on the use. Wet lube is more water resilient, however is it a lot more 'sticky' and so dust etc. will cling to it. Dry lube is 'drier' and so reduces the collection of dust., but is washed off faster by rain.

At the end of the day it's down to how and where you ride your bike, and how often you maintain it. Technically you should re-oil after riding in the rain anyway so you'd probably be better off with a dry lube. Especially now the sun's out again...

I use wet-lube all the time - dry lubes are only suitable for dry conditions and require far more regular reapplication. Regardless, wipe down the outside of the chain after application - you only need lube on the inside of a chain, not on the outside.
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..
