Currently riding a Raleigh Record Sprint (think its an 86) with a permanent buckle, and its getting a little annoying, the rim is beyond repair as the LBS said it looked like someone had tried to rebuild it at some stage in its life and made a complete hash of it, Its an old 12 speed, and as i understand it my only option is to go the coldset method but is it worth it? If anyone knows of any cheapish wheels still being made to fit the old frames or point me in the direction to an easier option, or replacement wheel that would be great :)

Cheers.

It ought to be possible to get a new rim built onto the hub. You might need to replace the spokes if you can't find one with the same ERD.

First, you need to make sure the hub is OK, so check the bearings. There's no point building a wheel onto a worn out hub.

After that, it depends on the wheel builder and the rim and spokes you select. I'm not sure how much your LBS or a wheelbuilder would charge, but I would think it would be in the region of £70 or £80 all up for a basis 32-spoke 3-cross wheel? Pretty hazy guess though, based on £30 for labour and £40 to £50 for parts. YMMV.

Assuming you don't have indexed shifters I'd just buy a new factory wheel + 8 speed cassette. the current OLN dimension is only 5mm bigger so you may find it goes in pretty easily without any frame bending shenanigans.
