shared cycle route

Part of the route I take in utilises a shared cyle/pedestrian route but I rarely use it prefering to use the road mainly because of the speed I travel at and the hidden driveways..is that wrong?
We don't have to use them do we?It seems some drivers think we have to.
You never see road bikes on them, they seem to be the reserve of "leisure" cyclists and families, not riders traveling at more than cruising speed.
I would just like to be aware of any legislation I may be missing, thanks.

There is no requirement to use cycle paths or cycle lanes.
The only roads you can't use are "special roads" eg motorwaysWant to know the Spen666 behind the posts?

I had a driver today advising me that I should be on there and not on the road because he didn't want to hit me... :shock:0

Que? You mean he felt obliged to hit you just because you're there
Did you point out that's what his eyes were for: avoiding hitting stuff ?
My commute to work takes me directly parallel to miles of cycle path that I've never used.
(actually, I used 300 yards once to avoid temporary traffic lights  )0 -
As has been pointed out, most cycle paths have to give way to traffic that is in turn giving way to the traffic on the road they parallel, they frequantly require you to go up and down slopes at the junctions as well, they are designed for poodlers and nodders.
Fortunately the only cycle path I use is a short cut across country with no road or give way or anything, almost eutopia!

Not always easy to ride in cycle lanes as this video shows:
