Simples. Select a route with a big climb followed by a long descent. Carefully position some bags of lead weights at top of the climb. Burn your riding buddy on the climb. At the top stop for a moments rest and at the same time place lead weights in your jersey pockets. Descend at lightening speed leaving your buddy totally bemused and demoralised. Ditch lead weights at bottom of descent.

The fact he's heavier would have an effect, it's like dropping a feather and a brick off a roof, what's going to hit the ground first?

    Never studied Physics?!

I initially thought that. It's that old one about a ton of feathers or a ton of lead though.

I have over simplified that and not posed the question the way the teacher used to when I was 11!!

She used to pi55 me off and I think I did her because I was one of the minority that said the same time - and if I remember arguing my point and then her winding me up trying to prove my point - when all I could do is point out the obvious!!

His mate is quite a bit heavier, that's why.

I have this with my son, he is 10st, I am 14st, he goes up hills like they are not there, but I just dissapear down hills, even if I use my mtb, and he has his racer, downhill weight helps - it's called gravity, just as my extra weight (and lack of fitness) holds me back up hills.

I weigh 68kg I go up OK and also go down past a lot of heavier riders. This is because I am presenting less profile to the air and I use far better wheels/hubs and tyre pressures than a lot of the heavier folk. There is also a lot to do with technique and ths use of the brakes but above all the most important thing is to get down safe and not be a hazards to other bikes and road users.

Yes - I knew there was a word for it. It's gravity!!

No wonder I got a D in science!

Actually an incredibly interesting subject, as many are, when you leave school and just realise exactly how sh1te the teachers that inspired nothing in you were.

They must have been so desparate to get away after working from 9 - 3.30 and having about 16 weeks off as holiday.

    It must of been taxing...

    Teaching - those that can't - "teach" - cheers.

How long will it be before Chinese is the global language??
