Metal finishing....

Right - technical question - probably for SimonAH!
I am going to have the fixie re-finished. The enamal finish that was done by Argoscycles has lasted about 2 years, but is showing signs of wear from where I lock the bike up.
What I would like to do is; Strip the finish off the frame and just clear coat the bare metal.
is this possible?
What kind of supplies are required?
Is it better to have the frame electroplated - chrome or something?
Thought and ideas?
I want to go with an industrial look :-)
Me vain, me likey likey....

Easy answer is yes, yes you can.
Nitromors and a wire brush to get the existing paint off is the cheapest option (although having the frame media blasted would be a shed load simpler and probably cost you around £25). Next a polishing wheel will get it to as shiny as you like (uses various grades of abrasive entrained wax). Finally a good clean down with thinners and a lot of coats of spray can lacquer. If you have a pillar drill (or a vice and a corded drill) and some space to do the work then I can lend you the kit – failing that you are welcome to use my workshop.
Alternatively how about getting a little creative? I always rather fancied having a steel frame coated in 86/10/4 Tungsten Carbide Cobalt Chrome with the HVOF process. On the one hand it will give you a matt dark grey finish which would look awesome, but on the other it would never rust and best of all totally un-scratchable with anything short of a diamond! Downside is that it would add (guestimate) about 2lb to the frame weight…
Or how about ceramic? Coat it in Chrome Oxide for a cool never rust black finish?

Actually no (although I can see why you'd think so). Cr2O3 comes out inky black. It's used a lot to coat rollers in the printing industry partly because the dark colour makes it easier to laser etch the surface to produce the little pockets that hold the ink.

I think I love you.
Brilliant stuff! I was thinking about a nickel coating - strip and dip.
I basically want it to look a bit industrial and be rust proofed for a while.
I also want these:
