Polar cs500 alitimeter reading query?

I have bought this and tried it out today, great device but the Altimeter reading is confusing me... (im not the sharpest as computers!)
its shows two figures, (1) a number in degrees eg 8degrees and (2) a %age figure eg 14%. The first figure always appears lower than the 2nd (%) figure.
Any ideas how i should interpret this? My previous Blackburn device just had a % figure whiich i correlated to general comments re TdF climbs being say 6, 7 or 9% or in the Giro being 20%! Wtf use is the degrees figure useful for?

Think I've seen the same on my CS200 and also been a little confused, according to the manual

the altitude/temp display :
Alt./Temp Maximum altitude
Temperature
