Hi all
I bought two new schwalbe tyres a couple of months back on the third run out the rear tyre developed a kink in it like a bulge out the side so i let it down and checked it was seated properly which is was reinflated and its still there. I eneded up changing it and its still at home having covers 100 miles. i bought two continentals they have done about 250 miles and today same thing. on the read felt a little bump everytime the wheels went round got off same thing? let it down reinflated it still there. i limped to palma in mallaorca changed the inner tube no different. ended up trying to ride it home as the pressure was lower it was no way as bad but when you look along the tread there was a kink in the tyre, I say was as ont he way home bang huge explosions and the tyre ripped to sheds with e huge hole in it? Now i never hit anything no potholes nothing infact its the smoothes road i use and its like glass? why would this happen? as ive done two brand new tyres in 400 miles and its getting a joke really?

Anyone got any ideas?

thanks jeff

This happened to one of my original Conti ultra sports when I got my bike..

Its a weakening of the sidewall so that the pressure of the inner bulges the tyre at this point and gives that lumpy feeling as you ride.

Personally, I replaced mine as soon as I found that this had happened, and put it down to the tyres being pretty crappy, me being heavy and possibly over inflation.

It shouldnt happen on new tyres that are inflated correctly though...

It sounds as though you might have put a twist in the tube when you've refitted it. Do you partially inflate the tube before you fit it or do you fit it completely flat?

    Brake pad fouling the tyre?

Tube valve pulled all the way through the rim? Kink in rim tape? Are you inflating tyre to correct pressure? Dodgy tube? Is the wheel true vertically?

I don't know why it happened, but I noticed a similar thing on my front tyre on a recent ride.

I took the tyre off when I got home and discovered that it was splitting from within. The cracks were not visible from the outside, but one look at the inside of the tyre showed that it was in a highly dangerous state. It could have exploded at any moment.

Not the kind of thing I'd want to happen on 50 mph Pennine descents ...

Strange - a year or two ago there was a faulty batch of Ultremos (and a recall) although personally I never suffered the issue. Only time I've had a tyre bulge was after a crash when I scuffed the sidewall - should have changed the tyre but didn't and it got worse, started to bulge and then a while later I had a blowout (luckily on the flat although it sounded like a gunshot so the rest of the club run weren't amused :p ). So you're right to change them but two in a row without an obvious cause is strange indeed and definitely worth going over your bike and wheels closely.

I encountered this when swapping some tyres around six weeks ago. It was down to the inner tube not being correctly seated inside the tyre/rim (the tyre bead was just nicking the tube).

Resolved by taking tyre & tube off, carefully repositioning the tube inside the tyre, partially inflate, put tyre back on to rim, ensure everything is symmetrical and correct, pump up to normal pressure, no bulge.

    Hi

I have had this.. with Schwalbe Marathon Plus tyres. It is a known Marathon issue - certainly not wide spread - that can occur. Google it and you'll find a few incidents on these tyres.

In my experience, it is about how the tyre beading sits on the rim. Mine was resolved by taking a VERY slim sliver off a section of the beading that wasn't quite smooth. Use a stanley knife and shave very, very carefully.

Then when re-fitting the tyre put a small amount of air into the tube, mount the tyre fully, then run around the tyre fully pulling the tyre back off the rim to check for pinching of the tube. Do this on both sides, then inflate fully. As you do so just push the tyre gently towards the rim to ensure that it is seating fully. It should take no more than ten minutes to do all of this.

Do this as a matter of course when changing tyres and tubes - keep the tyres at a good pressure always before rides - and you should have no problem with pinch punchers or bulges.

I had the same with a conti gatorskin. It had a kink in it when inflated. Took it on and off about 4 times assuming it was my bad fitting. In the end I took it back to the shop (local Halfords ) who swapped it for a new one, which was fine. Obviously a manufacturing fault.
