Help mew upgrade chainset! :)

Looking for some guidance here.
I've got an 2006 Specialized Allez. Looks like it's mostly running Sora 8 Speed (triple) with the exception of the rear derailleur which is a Tiagra 9speed.
Here's the problems:
* Middle and outer chainrings are mashed and I get a lot of slippage
* BB has a fair bit of play
* Rear derailleur pulley wheels are sticking for some reason, even after cleaning
Shifting isn't too bad, rear cassette is ok as it's fairly newish (came with new wheel), chain isn't too bad, brakes have been upgraded to 105's a while back so they are fine.
What's the cheapest route to get my bike working again
Ideally I would just replace the BB and Chainset, but I'm not sure what's out there that will be compatible.
I'm looking at something like this:
http://www.ribblecycles.co.uk/sp/road-t ... HIMCHAR490
But
* It's a double so I'd need new shifters - I would prefer a double as I never use the inner ring!
* It's 9 speed, so I don't know what else I'd need to replace - I'd rather not replace the shifters...
Essentially, if I have to replace the entire groupset (shifters included), I kinda feel I might as well get a new bike :P
Any suggestions?

You know what you really want...Giant Defy 3

You only need a new bb and chainset, just set the limit screws for the front derailer so you don't get the third click. 8 speed chain will work on a 9 or 10 speed chainset.Dolan Preffisio

Think this is what I'm gonna do.
Ribblecycles have the sora double chaninset for around £35, and the BB is around £10, so it won't cost me much0 -
You don't need a whole new chainset if it is just 2 chain rings that have become mashed - you can just buy replacement chain rings. Unless you really want to switch to a compact, I'd save money and keep your current shifters.
From what you decribe it sounds as if your gearing is too low for the cycling that you do. If it was me I'd stick with a triple and think about replacing chain rings, cassette (and at the same time chain) to give yourself a best spread of (higher ratio) gears.Nobody told me we had a communication problem0
