Creaking from left pedal...

Hey everyone!

I recently bought a Carrera Vengeange (21") as I needed a fairly cheap bike for the summer. It wasn't too bad for £248 all in (with a voucher too). Anyway, I took it on it's first proper ride yesterday and I noticed something. When I pedal down with my left foot, I hear a creaking noise. I've not had chance to look at it properly yet but I checked the pedal quickly and it seemed ok. I obviously know that the bike has quite low-end parts but there's obviously something wrong.

Can anyone advise me what to look for? I'm hoping to get out again later and I'd like to get it sorted.

Thanks in advance!

Pedals need to be kept tight to prevent squeking or coming loose.

Remeber that one of the is a left handed thread so if you try to tighten it and it comes loose then just turn the spanner the opposite way.

I find it is best to check for tightness once a month (depending on use).

If you tighten it and it still squeaks you probably have no grease on the thread, just remove it and apply some.

My lbs is fanatical at telling me/others/everyone that this needs to be done often.

Could also be the crank isn't on tight enough.
  • Things to check.

    1) Pedal (of course)
    2) Cleat/Shoe (I had a creaky shoe once!)
    3) Crank arm / Bottom Bracket. (Rock it side to side, anything loose here will be obvious).
    4) Seat mount. (Try standing and pedalling - if the noise stops, its was the saddle!)
    5) Handlebar/Stem can sometimes creak when you pedal - because you pull on the bars. (Try to deliberately NOT loading the bars when you pedal, if the noise stops you have found your creak!)

Anyway - As its a new bike, can you take it in for the shop to look at with you?
