cracked frame - warranty or insurance job?

Hi all

I bought a Focus Thunder 1.0 from Wiggle about 8 months ago. The frame cracked while riding at a trail centre, through no obvious impact or particularly big jumps/drop offs.

I am wondering whether my most economical way of dealing with the problem will be to go through Wiggle and the warranty process, or whether to go with the insurance - the bike is listed as a separate item on my contents insurance. Has anyone ever claimed on a cracked frame through insurance? I wondered whether you receive the full amount of the bike or whether I could only claim what the frame was estimated to be worth. I dont know how to put bikes together properly so obviously a new frame and a bunch of parts is not massively convenient for me!

Any advice please on how I can get riding again as soon as poss without losing out too much financially!

Thanks!

If the bike is in warranty then try to claim on that, if you claim on the insurance you can't be completely sure what you'll end up with and your premium will rise.

Up to Wiggle to sort out.

  • I have a Focus Izalco. After about a year, the frame was showing signs of paint cracking between the seat tube and top tube. I sent Wiggle a photo, and they contacted Focus, who asked for it to be returned. Wiggle sent me a box and paid for it to be returned to them and on to Germany. A few weeks later it came back with a new frame. Same forks and components were build up on it. I couldn't have asked for more. Just contact them and take it from there.

They were initially a bit slow responding to my original email, but once I had a contact it went great

I had a Specialised FSR XC that I bought second hand from Leisure Lakes in Daventry. I noticed a crack in the bottom of the top tube after a wkend in Afan, it was`nt there when I bought the bike.
LL`s returned the bike to Specialized for me, Specialized gave me a Pro frame in chrome paint instead of my red XC and LL`s built it all back up for free. It had to go back for some fine tuning but it was awesome service from them both really esp getting a much better frame for free!
