I would love to know if I were to buy the Garmin 800 and went to europe on a bike tour. When I search for a route does the system know what are unsuitable roads for bikes.. Ive used google maps in the past and found myself about to enter a toll road. That time I had a fifteen mile detour...NOT GOOD

Thanks

I can't say for certain because I don't have one, but I suspect it depends on how each country classifies its roads.

Our car satnav here in Spain tries to direct us along roads that aren't suitable for cars (too narrow, dirt tracks, etc) because these are classed as "roads". You'll probably get the same problem with the Garmin.

I have one - it allows you the option to "avoid highways", and I think that's about it.

    Hi Alexander,
What do you mean by 'search for a bike route' do you mean asking the device to navigate from point A to B say a postal code, address etc. The device should and note I say should take you along roads that are navigable by bike at least as that is what is was designed for (bikes)

However most of my routing is done before hand on bikeroutetoaster.com and uploaded to the device, this way I can try to ensure I am keeping to a certain class of road for my ride. In Spain (Mallorca) I am to ride camis which seem to all be navigable, have very light traffic, and keep me off busy major routes when I plan a ride.

I would ask for more indepth help/ support on this over at the garmin 800 forum just to be sure though (google for garmin 800 forum and you will find it) there is a wealth of info over there, both the good and the bad on the device, that should see you make an informed decision to buy one or not.

But I must say after the weekends 60 mile sportive I'm totally bowled over with mine, great turn by turn instructions, a countdown to the next turn and so much info to review during and after the ride. I wouldn't be without my 800 now!
